New Rule for New Yorkers! April 2, 2008

NYC Traffic

A bit of London living has now hopped the pond and made it’s way to New York City. In London, this was a plan to reduce traffic into the city by charging drivers to enter the city. Their plan has been successful for them but many of the London locals have not been happy with it. And now the same is about to happen to New York.

Mayor Bloomberg’s plan has barely passed by the city council which will now urge politicians of Albany to make it a law. Drivers will be charged to enter manhattan below 60th street. Cars will be charged $8 and trucks will be charged $21, Monday thru Friday from 6am to 6pm.

more NY trafficThe general idea behind this plan is to reduce traffic within our city streets and will also promote cleaner air within our city. The budget plans for this will also help the MTA provide better transportation to the city. However, this has many locals concerned and worried that the MTA will cheat New Yorkers and will not make proper use of the budget and many are asking what this can do for their wallets and for their businesses. Many are asking if they will get charged if they already live in the zone pricing area, others are concerned what this can cost people living in Brooklyn and Queens that rely on driving into the city as a way of commuting. This also raises the questions of how this will affect middle-class and income sensitive New Yorkers.

trafficAs a native New Yorker, I feel that this plan is not in the best interest of the city. This can discourage many outer-borough commuters and can discourage any tourists that are taking in a road trip travel. I also wonder what’s going to happen if I take a cab within the city, will my cab driver charge me an extra $8 to go downtown on top of the already raised meter prices? I think businesses will feel this pain if not now, maybe later on down the roads if this plan gets established. I think there is always going to be traffic and the city is always going to be chaos. That’s the city life and that’s always going to be in NY. Before you know it, there’s going to be too many people walking the streets of NYC. What then? We’ll be charged to walk a few blocks?

How do other people feel about this new plan? If you are a visitor, do you think this will work? If you are a local, can this plan benefit us at all? Definitely sound off your pros and cons about this new plan.

yankees opener

For those that were looking for the score on the Yankees game yesterday, well, it didn’t happen. March 31st home opener was a wash out and it was postponed for tonight, April 1st at 7:05pm against the Blue Jays. Although, weather for tonight’s game is also an issue. So will take 2 of the Yankees opening game move into take 3? Let’s hope for the fans of the Yankees that the home opener gets the show on the road. For more information on tonight’s game or for ticket information, visit www.yankees.com

The New York Public Library, The George Arents Collection
Baseball cards are so popular and some of them are even priceless.  “That can certainly be said for the 1910 Honus Wagner baseball card, widely considered the rarest of all American baseball cards. Timed for the start of the current baseball season, the New York City Public Library on 5th Avenue is allowing fans a glimpse of this revered icon of 20th-century sports memorabilia.”

“Through April 27th, the scrapbook that contains the Honus Wagner card will be on view in the Edna Barnes Salomon Room. Originally distributed by Sweet Caporal cigarettes, the card was pulled from circulation by Honus Wagner because he didn’t want children to have to buy tobacco in order to get the card. Little did he know his action would create a rare tribute to the boys of summer.”

23rd April Fool’s Day Parade Today!! April 1, 2008

Happy April fool’s everyone.  If you are bored and are tired of playing tricks on your friends and co-workers, then head over to the April Fool’s Parade today.

The New York April Fools’ Day Parade was created in 1986 to remedy a glaring omission in the long list of New York’s annual ethnic and holiday parades. These events fail to recognize the importance of April 1st, the day designated to commemorate the perennial folly of mankind. In an attempt to bridge that gap and bring people back in touch with their inherent foolishness, the parade annually crowns a King of Fools from parading look-alikes. The parade will be led by President George Bush and his entire cabinet. They will be given a 60-second lead and then pursued by an outraged lynch mob. This will be followed by a Macy’s Day Parade-size helium balloon of a B52 Bomber Equipped with Nuclear Missiles flying overhead as the April Fools’ Day Parade Marching Band plays Woody Guthrie’s “So Long, It’s Been Good to Know You.” The Parade’s Grand Marshall will be Ralph Nader, appropriately dressed as The Jester.”"

Date: Tuesday, April 1st
Time: 12:00pm
Location: 5th Ave & 59th St to Union Square
Cost: Free
