New ball for ‘08′ December 28, 2007

2008 New Year's Eve ballWe all know the significance of the New Year’s Eve ball in New York City. To the world, it symbolizes something that is amazing, wonderful and entertaining at the same time. Even for those that aren’t physically present when the ball drops, it is just as visible on TV.

This year, the ball has been reconstructed and relighted. Equipped with new energy efficient light bulbs, the ball will be bigger and brighter than ever; all the while still using half of the energy it used to. Workers were seen very busy on Thursday installing 672 Waterford crystal triangles on the New Year’s ball. It could be time consuming, said one worker, but he just loves doing it. That is why he keeps on coming back every year.

Go with friends, get there around 6pm.

Remember, no alcohol!

Have fun!!

New York’s New Year! December 26, 2007

In 1904, several transformations took place in New York City that would set us apart from the rest of the world: The invention of the Neon light, the opening of the first ever subway line and…the first celebration of New Year’s Eve in Times Square. Times Square was home to the New York Times building and the owner, German- Jewish immigrant Alfred Ochs lobbied to change the name surrounding his paper’s new home, to Longacre Square. He then had the hugest celebration in honor of his successful publication. “The impressive Times Tower, marooned on a tiny triangle of land at the intersection of 7th Avenue, Broadway and 42nd Street, was at the time Manhattan’s second-tallest building — the tallest if measured from the basement up.” On that night, Ochs spared no expense. The rattle, bustle and hustle of about 200,000 excited people could be heard for miles. The even was so successful, “Times Square instantly replaced Lower Manhattan’s Trinity Church as New York City’s favorite place to ring in the new year.” Two years later, fireworks were banned, but Ochs could not leave it alone. He ordered “a large, illuminated seven-hundred-pound iron and wood ball lowered from the tower flagpole precisely at midnight to signal the end of 1907 and the beginning of 1908.

It’s now 100 years since new York has been lowering the Times Square ball, ringing in the New Year with such flamboyancy, unlike any other in the world.

This year, make sure you get there early. The ball is lifted up at 6pm sharp and then lowered at 11:59 pm to thousands of eager voices counting down the new year. The Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball descends from a flagpole at the top of One Times Square. It can best be seen along Broadway, from 43rd Street to 50th Street, and along Seventh Avenue, as far north as 59th Street. Just for your own knowledge, more than a ton of confetti in dropped on that night.

Some things to consider:

  • Closings- 43rd Street and Broadway and moving north.
  • Access points- Enter from 6th or 8th Aves.
  • Viewing areas available for the disabled on 43rd street.
  • Take the 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F, N, Q, R, W, V and S shuttle to 42st.
  • No public restrooms.
  • No alcohol- Public drinking is illegal in NYC and alcohol will be confiscated.

Why SEO? December 24, 2007

SEO= Search Engine Optimization

For newbies such as myself, most SEO posts can be a bit confusing. Ok, let’s face it, it’s a lot confusing. I can’t say that I’m trying to break into the SEO world, but I would sure as hell like to learn as much as I can before I break into the industry. Many of my favorite bloggers do touch on this subject quite a lot, but somehow I don’t get the gist of it. Like if you were to ask me how to make apple pie, I would say….:

and give you the recipe; step by step.

Is SEO not a recipe? There are somethings you can do right, and then there are somethings you can do wrong. Just like a recipe. I know giving the ultimate recipe would be a stupid thing to do and the point of cooking is to learn. I suppose you can only learn SEO over a period of time. It’s not something that you can do overnight; I”m well aware of that. However, I would just like to have some tools that I can benefit from. I love to learn, but when there are a million people telling you a million different things, it’s hard to grasp it all at once. So, all in all, it just get confusing at times, but once you read it over and over again, I’m sure it’s going to make sense sooner than later.

One site that really helps me is SEO BOOK. It’s an awesome site and I really do learn a lot, day in and day out. Thanks SEO BOOK!

As we know, there are some last minute shoppers out there; such as myself. For some reason, I just can’t get it together and I don’t know why. Well, thank God for malls, and department stores. Just for people like myself, department stores and most malls will be opened 24 hours from now until the big day; Christmas. Macy’s in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan will be opened round the clock, so if you have last minute shopping, there are places still willing to rescue you. Also, most malls, like Queens Center and Manhattan Mall will be opened too. Happy shopping!!

Harlem? Changing? December 21, 2007

We all know that Harlem is the most well known town in New York City. People can’t get enough of it. It has produced some of the most prominent people in the past, present and will definitely continue to generate more leaders, actors, politicians, etc in the future. However, is it changing? Yes! It is. There are many small businesses that are worried about financial loss because of the bigger franchises and moguls taking over. There are million dollar condos, which no one can afford. Most of the mom and pop stores are disheartened because they look at Harlem as their home. As a matter of fact, most of them were raised there and still continue to live there.

Harlem stretches from the East River to the Hudson River at around 155th street, where is meets Washington Heights. When the Dutch settled in 1637 it was called Nieuw Haarlem, but the name quickly changed to Harlem as time changed. Now, Harlem is know for mainly its African American culture, unique shops and over the years; its crime. Although that is changing, Harlem will undergo a change pretty soon. Talks of building a 50 million dollar hotel in Harlem has now got its residents worried about the drastic change that will take place.

Throughout the years, Harlem has contributed, to society some of the most well known individuals of today! Here’s just a few:

  • Harry Houdini – Magician, lived at 278 West 113th Street from 1904 until his death in 1926

Top 8 things to get your guy for Christmas! December 20, 2007

It’s Christmas time and I’m not really fond of Christmas. I know, I know–everyone asks me why is that! The thing is that I never really had a great Christmas. I had a hard childhood and I can never really remember a happy Christmas nor a memorable one. So, I have vowed to dislike Christmas, but getting presents is always good, right?? So, in an attempt to get my boyfriend the perfect Christmas present, I came across some things that I thought other guys might like. Not the typical present, you may have to spend more than you want, but hey–what the hell?? It’s Christmas!!

Again–this is just my opinion :-)

#8 on my list is probably something that guys always want:

-Clothes: Whether it be dress clothes or casual clothes, a guy can never have too much clothes. Plus, we are talking about the 21 century man; so have too much clothes is not an option.

#7 I guess is kind or ordinary, but can come in handy, especially if he needs it:

-Watch or jewelry: just because some guys collect watches (my dad) and they love certain types of jewelry, so indulging in a pricey watch might be a good thing.

#6 I think no guy would refuse:

-A new cell phone: There are great new smart phones out, getting one for your special guy might really be something different. He can email, IM, text and all the other good stuff that comes with a new cell phone.

#5 can be a special thing:

-Concert tickets to his favorite band: Guys absolutely love their music, why not get him tickets to see his favorite band or performer? Hey, you can accompany him, or he can go with friends.

#4 for men that like to read:

-ebook: Some guys don’t like to read, actually many of the guys I know don’t like to read, but there are a few guys that love to read. Why not get him an ebook? He can read books on the train, in bed or wherever he wants. Plus, it’s a gadget that many guys would like!

#3 If women can learn to love this, I know guys absolutely love it:

-Nintendo Wii: Who doesn’t love Wii? It’s fun to throw your hands at the TV and watch objects move on the screen. Boxing is my favorite because I always win :-) You can play together and watch him squirm as you beat him at every game possible!!!

#2 kind of pricey–kind of:

-A laptop: For the computer geeks, a laptop would be a good idea. There are some great ones out and getting him a laptop might really set you over the top in his eyes. Personally, my boyfriend has 2 laptops–which he is always on. Why? Because he’s a computer GEEK and so am I to an extent, but he will literally use them both at one time! Hey, Computer guys, you know what I mean?? :-)

#1 for the person you love? Something that you can both benefit from:

-An LCD/Plasma HDTV: Yes, it can run you a pretty penny, but you can get some good deals out there and guess what? It’s really not too late to pick one of these things up. Trust me, he will love it!!

It’s too bad you can’t get guys cheap things–like just a bottle of cologne, that’s cheesy; especially for Christmas!! You have literally all year to save–do it!!

“I am Legend”- My own review! December 20, 2007

Disclaimer: The information given in this post is just my opinion.  Not responsible for spoiling the movie to others.  (In short, please don’t read this if you haven’t seen the movie or if you plan on seeing it).

Since I was down yesterday, I figured; hey, why not go see this movie that I was dying to see.  So, to the movies I went.  Of course, the theater was packed even though the movie opened like a week ago.
I was scared, I was jumpy throughout the entire movie.  There are some things that I don’t get.  Why did he not go with his family?  Did he really think that he would do this, find a cure all by himself?  As shoeMoney says, “I thought it was a 3 hour movie condensed into a 1:40 minute movie.”  I do absolutely agree.  Why didn’t all the vampires attack him when they set up that trap?  And, is it me, or was there like a “leader” vampire?  Overall, the saddest part of the movie for me was: you know?? When Sam died!!!  Yes!  I was tearing a little–what a cutie and I really couldn’t help it!!  I give this movie 31/2 stars.  Only because it didn’t quite explain everything as it should.  It should have been longer in order to complete the storyline.  I must say that Will Smith did an amazing job.  Just enough comedy, sadness, suspense, and horror!  Last night, my boyfriend asked me if I liked it or not.  I said I didn’t know and now after writing this review and reading other reviews, I still don’t know.  Bottom line: I don’t know if I liked it or disliked it!!  Perhaps by this weekend I will know when I sleep on it a little bit more. :-)
